This article is about RSS feeds and how they can be used in the classroom environment. The author explains that RSS means really simple syndication and that it allows people to follow topics and blogs that are interesting to them. Almost all newspapers offer them, and they are on iTunes and blogs and are a way to track topics and stay current with friends and news. Examples are stated about how RSS can be incorporated in the classroom, such as having each student create a blog and work with other students and submit assignments through their blog.

To your knowledge how can RSS feeds be incorporated into teaching?

I think RSS feeds have become extremely popular on the Internet with Facebook and almost all news articles being able to be shared. Classes that look at current events in the news can use RSS feed to help collaborate and share resources they find. Also like the article stated RSS feeds and blogs can be integrated into course just like this Blog has for EDU 422.

Is there a down side to research done using RSS feeds only?

Yes, I believe that students need to make sure they are using historical sources that maybe not available on the Internet and only in school or public libraries.

Journal 3-Walk, Fly, or Teleport to Learning: Virtual Worlds in the Classroom- Nets 5

Yoder, M. B. (2009, October). Walk, Fly, or Teleport to Learning: Virtual Worlds in the Classroom. Retrieved from http://www.iste.org/AM/Template.cfm?Section=September_October_No_2_3&Template=/MembersOnly.cfm&NavMenuID=4381&ContentID=24200&DirectListComboInd=D

In this article Maureen Brown Yoder discusses MUVEs, which is defined as “Internet-based multiuser virtual environments”. Yoder states that MUVEs are becoming increasingly more popular especially to children. The author says that these virtual environments can be content rich and a place where children can learn social, technical, and practical life skills in a fun environmet. The article describes a specific MUVE, called Second Life and states that it is safe because students can only be added to, Second Life by their teacher. MUVEs have been applied to subjects, such as science. It was seen that students enjoyed the program so much they decided to continue their learning at home.

Have you ever participated in a MUVE?

No, I haven’t but I have heard of this type of virtual environment applied to video games. I have heard that the game World of War Craft has been very popular with gamers and that if this virtual environment was applied academically the outcome would be just as popular.

After reading this article would you feel it is safe to participate and have students participate in MUVEs?

Yes, I believe before teaching anything on the internet it is important to teach students about their virtual identity and internet safety. Especially because the MUVE is authorizing students to use it only and having them have their own user name and password it would be safe.

Journal 4- Point/Counter Point: Can Facebook Replace Face-to-Face?- Nets 5

Anderson, L. S., & Hildenbrand, E. K. (2009, October). Point/Counter Point: Can Facebook Replace Face-to-Face?. Retrieved October 1, 2009, from ISTE.

This article described Facebook as a social networking website and also asked the question if Facebook could replace face-to-face encounters. It gave two different peoples perspectives. The first was that of Larry S. Anderson, who stated yes, it could replace face-to-face. He stated that Facebook allows judgments of people to be overseen because it is online and opinions can be heard with less fear of rejection. The other perspective was against Facebook, Ellen Hildenbrand felt that online communication can be wrongly construed and it takes out the person ability some may get from the face-to-face atmosphere.

What is your opinion on the social networking cite Facebook?

I believe Facebook is a great way of communicating with others but can have some negative aspects. I believe written work can lead to misleading perspectives on what people may trying to say. For example, sarcasm cannot be shown as well trough text and can sometimes be mistaken for the words literal meaning.

What are some other social networking websites and can they be considered a possibility of replacing face-to-face?

Another website that is similar to Facebook and can be consider to replace face-to-face would be Myspace. Twitter can also be considered but it is a little different because it is considered micro-blogging and has a limitation to how much you can say at one point in time.

Journal 2- Grounded tech integration- Nets 5

Harris, Judi, & Hofer Mark (2009). Grounded tech integration. L & L, 37(2), Retrieved from http://www.iste.org/AM/Template.cfm?Section=September_October_No_2_3&Template=/MembersOnly.cfm&NavMenuID=4381&ContentID=24179&DirectListComboInd=

This article is about different ways of integrating technology into the classroom. The authors believe the first-step in implementing technological based teaching is to make sure educators are aware of the technology available to them. They believe this creates a grounded approach to the integration of technology in the lesson plans. The article then addresses that processes need to be followed in order to do this:

1. Choose learning goals.
2. Make pedagogical decisions.
3. Select activity types to combine.
4. Select assessment strategies.
5. Select tools/resources.

Do you agree that teaches should be aware of the technology before teaching the lessons?

Yes, I believe that it would be extremely beneficial for both students and the teacher that teachers are well aware of what they are doing before they try to teach it to students.

Why is it important to think about what activity types can be combined?

It’s important due to the limited time a teacher has to make sure students have a firm grasp on the material. If topics are integrated into different subject matter the students will not only have more time that specific criteria, the teacher can see that students are exposed to different subjects at the same time.

Journal 1-From Alaska to Arkansas, Districts are Experimenting with Online Learning to Solve Access Problems- Nets 5

Coyle, S., Jones, T., & Pickle, S.K. (2009). From Alaska to Arkansas, Districts are Experimenting with Online Learning to Solve Access Problems. Learning & Leading with Technology, 37(2), Retrieved September 9, 2009 from http://www.iste.org/Content/NavigationMenu/Publications/LL/LLIssues/Volume3720092010/SeptemberOctoberNo2/e_Learning_Programs_Come_in_All_Shapes_a.htm

This article discussed three different organizations and their relation to integrating technology into education. They did this through distance learning, also known as online instruction for classes. After these organizations implemented their ways of teaching using their form of technology students seemed to be doing better and achieving more out of their education.

Do you think students need some instructional in class time to accompany the online learning?

I think it depends on the students and the subject matter. If the teacher thinks it would be benefical to all the students then it should be mandatory. I believe that no matter what teachers should make themselves available to students because in person instruction is sometimes what a student needs to benefit from the assignment. Also the subject matter being taught can affect the need to in class learning. For example, some topics in science need laboratory settings to aid material something that can be
limited with online resources.

How can educators help students that have limited access to a computer to excel in distance learning?

I think it is important for every school to let students have access to a computer lab that has an abundance of hours of operation. These labs should be well equipt with computers, free printers and copy machines. That way students can print out assignments to do at home then input their answers online when they are at the computer lab.

Journal 10- Computer Science Is Not Just for Big Kids- Nets 5

Grover, Shuchi. "Computer Science Is Not Just for Big Kids ." Learning & Leading with Technology (2009): n. pag. Web. 8 Dec 2009. .

In this article Shuchi Grover, is explaining how computer science is not seen as much as it should be in the elementary school setting. She also states that the definition of computer science is defined wrong. The term is just related to computers and that people do not take in count all the other aspects of the Computer science subject, such as “algorithmic thinking, Boolean logic, functional abstraction, and data organization and management.” She then goes in depth in relating algorithmic thinking, data and structure databases and Booleanian logic for critical thinking.

Why is computer science not popular in the elementary school setting?

My personal opinion is because teachers are not well aware of how they can apply computer science and technology into their teaching. It is important that teaches research and peruses different types of teaching in order to instill creativity into students.

Other than computers what other digital tools can help teach computer science?

I believe computer science can be taught using different instruments such as, calculators, microscopes and even music instruments. Some teachers don’t know how to apply of forms of technology besides the computer.

This is a sample of work I created using the digital tool Quizlet. I added information on this website that can be used to help educators quiz students on subject matter. The wiki page is a collaboration of work in our Education 422 class.
